If you’ve ever looked at a perfectly styled bed in a magazine or showroom and wondered, “How do they make it look that good?” — you’re not alone. The secret? Layered bedding. Think of your bed like an outfit — each layer adds comfort, style, and personality.

Today I’m walking you through how to layer your bed like a pro. Whether you love a cozy, casual vibe or a more polished and high end look, these steps will help you get that “wow” factor every time you walk into your bedroom.

1. Start with a Good Foundation: The Mattress Pad

Think of a mattress pad as your bed’s base layer. Not only does it protect your mattress, but it also adds a little extra cushion and softness. Look for one that’s breathable and easy to wash. I’m a big fan of Downlite’s mattress pads – I have two of them to easily switch out when it’s time to wash my bedding.

2. Layer on Smooth, Soft Sheets

Crisp white, playful patterns, calming neutrals — whatever suits your style. Choose quality sheets with a soft hand (cotton percale or sateen are always a win). Boll and Branch offers some of the most luxurious feeling sheets you’ll ever sleep on!

3. Add a Comforter or Quilt

This is where your personality really shines. Go bold with color or stay neutral with texture — either way, make sure it complements your room. Pro tip: Fold it neatly at the foot of the bed for that hotel-chic look, or pull it all the way up for maximum coziness.

4. Bring in the Euro Pillows (Yes, the Big Square Ones!)

Two or three euro pillows go at the back, against your headboard. They add height and give your bed that plush, finished feel. Choose plush inserts like these and covers that coordinate with your bedding — maybe a subtle texture like velvet or linen or a soft pattern.

5. Layer in Coordinating Standard Pillows

Next come your regular sleeping pillows. If your comforter or quilt came with matching shams — this is their moment. Stack or prop them in front of your euro pillows to start building up to the finish.

6. Toss on a Couple of Throw Pillows

Here’s where you can have fun. Go for a mix of shapes, textures, or patterns. One long lumbar or two square pillows in a contrasting (but complementary!) color can really pull everything together.

7. Finish Your Layered Bedding with a Throw Blanket or Quilt

Drape a cozy throw or a lightweight quilt across the foot of your bed. It adds an extra layer of warmth and gives your whole bed that effortless, styled look — plus it’s perfect for naps or chilly toes.
